My name is Gražvyda Andrijauskaitė. I have graduated from Vilnius (Lithuania) Academy of Arts. I had an opportunity to study and gain experience from established Lithuanian artists. While studying at Vilnius (Lithuania) Academy of Arts I proofed major traditional graphics techniques but was most fascinated by potential of intaglio printmaking.
My works originate from printing the drawing engraved into the metal plate on the paper by special printing press. First of all the drawing is engraved on the specially prepared metal plate using the etching needle. Before engraving the metal needs to be properly prepared, metal plate needs to be polished and applied with a special varnish. After the varnish has dried I engrave the drawing into the metal plate using the etching needle. Engraving is the main creative activity occupying most of the time. After engraving the metal plate I dip it into the special chemical solution which bites the incised lines and the area applied with a special varnish remains clean, unaffected by solution. Unbitten varnish area remains as light background after printing the work. After proper time I pull out the plate from the solution and clean the varnish from it by special varnish cleaner. Then the printing processes start: all metal plate is rubbed by ink and is thoroughly cleaned so that the polished metal is being exposed in unengraved empty areas while incised lines would fill with ink. So the lines bitten by chemical solution are being filled with ink and those areas that have not been affected by the solution remain free of ink. Then the print is being made from the metal plate rubbed with ink on a special etching paper. Printing press is needed to obtain the print. Thanks to high pressure applied the drawing is transferred from the metal plate onto the paper.
I often combine my favorite etching technique with other techniques which allow me not only to obtain a linear drawing but also to obtain tones and relief. Next to etching I usually combine aquatint technique which allows creating different intensity tones.
Sometimes I use drypoint technique which allows to obtain intense and soft lines.
I also like to cut the metal plate, i.e. to provide the work with a different shape while not always using the traditional rectangular shape. For this reason the special metal cutting tinships are being used.
Prints are being editioned, i.e. it is very important to number the print and mark the total number of its edition. Each print is regarded as an original artwork.
